Vera Mae Buller Zuber

October 25, 1918 — August 20, 2010

Vera Mae Buller Zuber was welcomed into God's grace Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, in Fort Worth, Texas. Vera was born Oct. 25, 1918, in Spokane, WA, to Effie Mae Arney Buller and Cornelius Buller. Her mother and father separated leaving Vera and her siblings to be raised by various family members. She was raised by her Uncle David and Aunt Ethel Buller in Brookings, SD. She graduated from Brookings High School and attended Brookings Teachers College. She then moved to Los Angeles, CA, and was reunited briefly with her sisters. She eventually returned to her first love of teaching and accepted a position at a one-room school outside Gettysburg, SD, where she taught for several years. In 1944, she married Raymond K. Zuber, the older brother of one of her students. In 1953, they moved from South Dakota to a farm in Columbia, MO, where they raised their family instilling in them strong religious views, and a love of education, good books, and even better tools. Vera's belief that you never stopped learning was demonstrated by her attendance at the University of Missouri-Columbia and also when, late in life, she became a nursing assistant, eventually retiring from Columbia's Veterans Hospital. Raymond was employed at the University Hospital as a maintenance electrician. In the later years of their 56-year marriage, the couple moved to Corvallis, OR, and then to Visalia, where they were members of Grace Lutheran Church. A few years after Raymond's death in 2001, Vera moved to Fort Worth to the wonderful James West Alzheimers Center. Vera is survived by her daughter Shelley Zuber Khal (Dan) of Visalia, CA; David Zuber (Marilyn Constien Zuber), Corvallis, OR; Carol Zuber-Mallison (Rodger), Fort Worth, TX; and Ken Zuber (Victoria Schonberg Zuber), Seattle, WA. As well as the loves of her life, her grand-children: Chris Khal, Fresno, CA; David and Brian Khal, Visalia, CA; and Rachel and Jacob Mallison, Fort Worth, TX. Vera will be buried next to Raymond in the Visalia Cemetery at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Pastor Bob Schroeder of Grace Lutheran Church will conduct the graveside service. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at Hadley-Marcom Funeral Chapel in Farmersville. Arrangments by: Hadley-Marcom Funeral Chapel: 332 E. Visalia Road; Farmersville, CA 93223.
