December 22, 1930 — April 19, 2022

William Newton Mitchell Visalia - William Newton Mitchell, 91, passed away on April 19, 2022, after a brief illness. He was born December 22, 1930, to William Burr Mitchell and Luella Willson in Visalia, California. He was raised in Visalia, graduating from Visalia Union High School in 1948. Upon graduation and one semester at Stanford University, he joined the United States Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps he met and married Frances Grace Cook. Together they had two daughters, Sydney and Stacey. In 1952, after they were both discharged from the Marine Corps, they returned to Visalia to make their home. They were later divorced. Having been born and raised in Visalia, he spent his entire life there with the exception of his schooling and military service. He loved Visalia and never felt the need to live anywhere else. He was a real estate broker for most of his long career. His local heritage was important to him and he spent time passing along family stories to his posterity. He had many life-long friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved his cats, golfing and cactus. He especially enjoyed planting and harvesting his tomatoes and sharing his bounty with his neighbors. He had a sharp mind, quick wit and amazing sense of humor. Bill was preceded in death by his wives Judith E. Markus and Frances Larson. He is survived by his daughters, Sydney Peterson (Tom) of Logan, Utah, and Stacey Hungerford (William) of Bakersfield, California. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Maren Aller, Christian Hinckley, Burke Peterson, Kate Astle and William Hungerford and five great-grandchildren, Noah, Cole, Tess, Addison and Alivia. JoAnne Shaw Jordan, his loving companion for the last several years, also survives him. Bill will be fondly remembered and missed by his family, friends and neighbors. He lived his life to the fullest until just before his passing. He will be interred in the Visalia Public Cemetery.
